Product photography plays a pivotal role in shaping the perception of ecommerce brands, as it directly influences consumers' purchasing decisions. High-quality and visually appealing product images not only showcase items in their best light but also build trust, increase conversion rates, and enhance the overall shopping experience, ultimately contributing to a brand's success in the competitive online marketplace.

How Much Product Photography Do You Actually Need?

One of the questions I get asked all the time is:

"How many product photos do I actually need?"

The honest answer is...it depends.

But not as much as people think.

Some brands assume they need 20 images of every product. Others think one photo is enough. The reality is somewhere in the middle.

My goal isn't to give you as many images as possible. My goal is to give you the right images.

There Is a Bare Minimum

Technically, you only need one image to sell a product.

Would I recommend that?

Absolutely not.

If you're working with a tight budget, I typically recommend aiming for three images per product.

Those three images give shoppers a better understanding of what they're buying without requiring a huge investment.

If you're looking to build a stronger Ecommerce store, my recommendation is usually seven images per product.

That doesn't include homepage photography, hero banners, or other marketing images. Those serve a completely different purpose.

Why I Like Seven Images

Seven isn't a magic number.

It's simply the point where I feel you've answered most of your customer's questions without overwhelming them.

One thing I've learned over the years is that more images don't automatically lead to more sales.

People are busy.

People are impatient.

People aren't going to scroll through 20 photos of the same product.

Seven images is usually enough to build confidence, tell the story, and help someone decide whether your product is right for them.

My Ideal Product Page

When I'm planning a photoshoot, I almost always think about the product page in the same order.

I like to start with one to three ecommerce images.

These are your clean, professional images on a white background that clearly show the product.

There's a reason I put these first.

Customers are already used to shopping on sites like Amazon. They're conditioned to expect clean product images before they dive deeper into the details.

It also creates consistency across your website. When someone clicks from one product to the next, every page feels familiar and organized.

After the ecommerce images, I like to include four lifestyle images.

These are the images that help tell your brand story.

They show the product in use, create emotion, highlight details, and help customers picture themselves using it.

Together, those seven images create a product page that feels complete without asking customers to keep swiping forever.

Consistency Is More Important Than Quantity

One mistake I see all the time is brands focusing on how many photos they need instead of whether those photos work together.

I'd rather see seven cohesive images than 20 images that all feel different.

Maybe one product was photographed by one photographer.

Another was photographed in-house.

A third was taken on someone's phone.

Individually, the photos might be perfectly fine.

Together, they make the brand feel inconsistent.

When every product page has different lighting, editing styles, backgrounds, and compositions, your Ecommerce store starts to feel disconnected.

Customers might not know exactly why, but they notice.

Consistency builds trust.

Don't Forget Your Homepage

One thing that's often overlooked is the homepage.

Brands spend so much time thinking about product pages that they forget the very first image customers see.

Your hero image shouldn't just be a nice picture.

It should be designed to work with your headline, your copy, and your call-to-action.

I've seen beautiful photos that completely fall apart once the website designer adds text over them.

When I'm planning homepage photography, I'm already thinking about where the headline will sit, where the button will go, and how the image supports the overall message.

Good photography and good web design should work together.

My Advice

If you're trying to figure out how much product photography you need, don't start by asking how many images you can afford.

Start by asking what your customers need to see before they feel confident buying.

For most brands, that means:

  • 3 images if you're working with a limited budget.

  • Around 7 images if you want a complete product page.

  • Dedicated homepage and hero images that support your website's messaging.

  • A consistent look across every product in your catalog.

The goal isn't to fill a gallery.

The goal is to create an experience that makes shopping easy.

Final Thoughts

As a Product Photographer, I've learned that great product photography isn't about producing the biggest image library.

It's about creating the right images in the right order.

When every image has a purpose, your website feels more professional, your products are easier to shop, and your customers have the confidence to click "Add to Cart."

That's always the goal.
