Where Can You Find an Ecommerce Photography Studio in the US?
If you're searching for an ecommerce photography studio, you might be starting with Google searches like “product photographer near me” or “ecommerce photography studio in Boston.”
But here's the good news: your product photographer doesn't actually need to be near you.
Unlike a headshot, event, or location photoshoot, your products can travel. That means you can choose an ecommerce photographer based on their work, experience, and approach rather than whoever happens to have a studio within driving distance.
At Prospect Street Studio, we're based in Worcester, Massachusetts, but we work with ecommerce brands throughout Boston, New England, and across the country.
We've had products shipped to our Worcester photography studio from brands all over the US, including West Coast brands like Orgain.
So, how does the whole remote product photography thing actually work?
It's pretty simple.
Step 1: We Figure Out What You Actually Need
Before you throw a box of products in the mail, we start with a discovery call.
This is where we talk through your brand, products, and what you're trying to accomplish with the new photography.
We'll look at things like:
Where are the images going to be used?
Are you selling on Amazon, Shopify, your own website, or multiple platforms?
How many products and SKUs are we photographing?
What does your current product carousel look like?
Do you need clean ecommerce images, lifestyle photography, or both?
Are there specific features or benefits we need to communicate?
What other marketing needs should we consider while we're planning the shoot?
I don't want to photograph a product just because someone sent me a shot list that says, “front, back, side.”
I want to understand what those images actually need to accomplish.
That way, we're building an image library you can use, not just checking photos off a list.
Step 2: Ship Your Products to Our Worcester Studio
Once we have the plan figured out, you ship your products directly to Prospect Street Studio in Worcester, MA.
That's it.
If you're local to Worcester, Boston, or elsewhere in Massachusetts, you can also arrange to drop your products off.
But if you're in California, Texas, Florida, or anywhere else in the country, there's usually no reason for you or your marketing team to fly out for the shoot.
We can handle the photography here while you keep doing what you need to do there.
Step 3: We Create Your Ecommerce Photography
Once everything arrives, it's time to shoot.
For most ecommerce brands, we're creating some combination of clean product-on-white photography and lifestyle product photography.
Your clean ecommerce images are the workhorses.
These are the images that clearly show customers what they're buying. Depending on the product, that could include the front and back of the packaging, different angles, individual products, group shots, packaging details, or what's actually inside.
These images can be used across Amazon, Shopify, retailer websites, wholesale materials, catalogs, ads, and other sales channels.
And because they're generally less campaign-specific than lifestyle photography, they can often have a pretty long lifespan.
Then we can add lifestyle photography to give the product some context and personality.
This is where we get to show how the product is used, who it's for, what it looks like in a real environment, or how it fits into someone's life.
Depending on the project, that might mean building a lifestyle setup in the studio or planning a separate location shoot.
The important part is that we're thinking about both types of photography together.
Your white-background images educate the customer about what they're buying. Your lifestyle images help them imagine actually having it.
But How Do You Do a Photoshoot Without Being There?
This is probably one of the biggest questions brands have about working with a photographer remotely.
You really don't need to sit next to me while I'm photographing your products.
Actually, most of my ecommerce clients don't.
A lot of the important decisions happen before shoot day.
We've already talked through the goals, created the shot list, discussed the visual direction, and figured out where the images need to be used.
For shoots where we need approval on the look, I can also provide lighting samples so we're aligned before moving through the entire product line.
The goal is to make the process easy whether you're 10 minutes from the studio or 3,000 miles away.
Working With an Ecommerce Photographer Remotely Can Actually Be Easier
There are some pretty obvious advantages to choosing your photographer based on fit rather than location.
Your marketing team doesn't have to spend a day traveling to a photography studio.
You don't have to coordinate flights and hotels.
And you aren't limited to photographers within your immediate area.
Instead, you can look for someone who understands the type of photography you need and has experience creating images specifically for ecommerce.
That's especially important because ecommerce product photography isn't just traditional commercial photography on a white background.
You need someone thinking about Amazon requirements, Shopify product pages, carousel strategy, image consistency, lifestyle needs, infographics, homepage imagery, and all the other places those photos might eventually end up.
What Should You Look for in an Ecommerce Photography Studio?
Whether you're hiring a photographer in your city or shipping your products across the country, I would look beyond whether they can technically take a good photo.
Look at their portfolio. Do they have experience with products similar to yours?
Look at consistency. Can they create a cohesive image library across multiple SKUs?
Ask about strategy. Are they asking where the images will be used, or are they just asking how many photos you want?
And pay attention to communication. If you're working remotely, you should feel confident that everyone understands the plan before your products ever arrive at the studio.
You don't necessarily need the closest photographer.
You need the right photographer for the project.
What If You're Local to Massachusetts?
Of course, being nearby has its perks too!
Prospect Street Studio is located in Worcester, Massachusetts, which makes us a convenient ecommerce photography studio for brands throughout Worcester County, Boston, Central Massachusetts, and New England.
Local brands can drop products off at the studio, and projects that require models, specific locations, manufacturing facilities, restaurants, or other on-location photography can be planned throughout the region.
So if you're searching for a Boston product photographer but don't necessarily need to be in downtown Boston for the shoot, Worcester can be a pretty convenient option.
What If You're on the Other Side of the Country?
Ship it to us.
Really.
We've worked with brands across the country, including West Coast brands like Orgain, without their teams needing to come to Massachusetts for the shoot.
Your location doesn't have to determine who creates your ecommerce photography.
If you find a photographer whose style, experience, and process make sense for your brand, shipping products is often the easiest part of the entire project.
